Choosing the right Book Cover Size often seems hard, especially when terms like aspect ratio, pixels per inch and EPUB sound totally strange. But it does not have to be this difficult. Work with a book designer or create the designs yourself, either way there are clear guidelines for printed and e-books.

For printed books the right Book Cover Size matters a lot. Standard Book Cover Size for a fiction book is 6 × 9 inches. For nonfiction books one commonly uses 5.5 × 8.5 inches, 6 × 9 inches or 7 × 10 inches.
Simple Guide to Book Cover Sizes
Genres like novel, science fiction, fantasy, horror, suspense and thriller also follow those standards. Internal format and size of the book decides the number of pages. That number then decides the width of the spine.
And finally the spine affects the whole Book Cover Size. The width of the spine changes based on the number of pages. For example books of 24 to 72 pages have a spine of 0.22 inches.
Those with 73 to 146 pages need a 0.37-inch spine. Bigger volumes, like between 367 and 400 pages, reach even 0.96 inches.
Set the internal pages at 6 × 9 inches, which works well, or 6.125 × 9.25 inches when you include bleeds. It is best to use images in 300 DPI and fonts that are embedded. Services for printing on demand offer their own templates.
You enter the Book Cover Size, number of pages and type of paper, and the website creates the template. You load it in Photoshop, where you then place the images for the front, back and spine parts.
Covers for e-books are different. Ideal measures for e-book files are 2,560 × 1,600 pixels. Minimum allowed image size is 1,000 × 625 pixels, while maximum reaches 10,000 × 10,000 pixels.
For KDP e-book covers 1,800 pixels wide and 2,700 pixels tall in 300 DPI works well. Around 1,400 × 2,200 pixels give grate results, that both Amazon and Kobo use. Apple Books require 1,400 × 1,873 pixels or 1,600 × 2,400 pixels, with minimum width of 1,400 pixels in JPG or PNG format.
An aspect ratio of 1.5 to 1 is the best for visibility and advertising. This measure works on Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo and other platforms. Some designers set the canvases at 4,800 × 3,200 pixels, which doubles the smallest suggested size.
For covers based on hardcover, 1,120 × 1,680 pixels keep the right proportion. When it is for paperback, 952 × 1,680 pixels remove the slantedlook.
Amazon wants images to have at least 300 DPI. If it is less, artifacts can appear, because the image does not cover the whole cover. When someone only makes e-books, you can simply ignore the spine width and calculations about right sizes.
