The Smog Reading Level simply helps to estimate how difficult reading of text is. According to its definition, it matches the literacy of average folk at a certain age. When one says “Smog Reading Level of the 5th class“, that means that the text is almost equally difficult as that fits a typical child in the 5th year of school.

What Reading Levels Mean and How to Use Them
The AR book level uses numbers with decimals for instance 4.2, on the other hand Lexile measures give bigger whole figures, like 770.
