The world of Dune is vast, with many books to explore. Deciding where to start can seem a bit overwhelming. The good news is that the Dune Book Series Reading Order is really quite easy, when one understands the basics.
The best spot to start is the six original books that Frank Herbert wrote. One should read them in the order of publication. The six main works are made up of Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, Divine Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune.
Best Way to Read the Dune Books
Read them in this order works best, because it follows clear timeline inside the story itself. Dune appeared in 1965, Dune Messiah in 1969, Children of Dune in 1976, Divine Emperor of Dune in 1981, Heretics of Dune in 1984 and Chapterhouse: Dune in 1985. Divine Emperor of Dune is maybe the best of all in its kind.
Reading in publishing order helps to keep the thematic growth that Frank Herbert built over years. It also allows the story to unfold naturally with the viewpoint of the author. The new films cover only partially the first novel, so reading the books befroe looking at them is a wise idea.
Everything except those six books is extra work written by Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert, together with Kevin J. Anderson. The universe of Dune carries several series: Legends of Dune, Schools of Dune, Prelude to Dune and the Caladan Trilogy. In total there are around 26 books.
The endings of Dune, Messiah, Children and Divine Emperor all bee excellent moments to end reading and leave the adventure.
For those that want more after finishing the six by Frank Herbert, the trilogy Prelude to Dune is a good next stage. It describes the backstory of the big houses, starting with House Atreides and Leto Atreides, father of Paul. The trilogy starts with House Atreides, then House Harkonnen and ends with House Corrino.
Later, the trilogy about the Butlerian Jihad deserves reading before moving to Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune. Timeline wise, the Butlerian Jihad happens around 10,000 years before the original novel. It sets up the feudal world of the books after a cruel war between the last free people and the artificial machines that they created.
Another option is to read everything in the timeline order of the universe, from Butlerian Jihad through Great Schools, then the books about the Houses and Caladan, then the original six and finally the more recent continuations. Here however there can be difference in quality between the original six and the extended novels. Staying with the publishing order andadvancing slowly stays the easiest way.
