SAT Basics: Parts, Scores and Tips
Since its debut in 1926, the SAT and its system changed often. For a long time, you called it the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and it had only two parts (Verbal and Mathematical) with a score of 200 to 800 for each. Also the format changed, because you went from the traditional paper and pencil to a new digitla version.
From the 1,973,891 students that graduated in 2024 and did the SAT, the average score was 1024 (519 in Reading and Writing and 505 in Math). For the high school seniors of 2023, the average result was 1028 from 1600. The SAT is structured so that the average points usually surround the number 1050.
From almost 1.7 million students that do the test every year, only around 300 receive a perfect 1600. A perfect result by means of “superscoring“, when you combine the best math point of one attempt with the best English point of another… Is more common in universities that allow that.
For top schools like the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT and Berkeley, points between 1450 and 1550 are ideal. Students accepted at Stanford usually have results between 1510 and 1570. A score above 1500 is very good for the best 20 schools, and to get 800 in math, you almost must answer everything correctly.
The score of the SAT does not work by means of a simple calculation of points for every question. Doing one more mistake does not always mean losing the same number of points. You count the results from the right answers, but you do not subtract points because of wrong answers, which makes it almost impossible to receive only 400.
As a fast guide based on present percentiles, a point around 590 puts a student near the highest quarter in Reading and Writing; 690 is near the highest 10 percent, and 740 is around the highest 5 percent. Studying the standards of English grammar is probably one of the easiest ways to improve the English score by around 50 points.
Practice points and actual results usually differ by around 40 points. Practice with Khan Academy can help a lot. One person went from 600 to 770 in math during two months using the videos and exercises of Khan Academy.
Setting a target score is an important step that helps to understand the wholesystem.
