Words per minute, or WPM, show the pace at which people talk. That is a measure of how many words you say in one minute. If you understand how many words to include in a talk that can a lot affect the success of the presentation.

Too many words can push your talk too fast, while too few can leave the talk feeling a bit empty.
How Fast Should You Talk
For average people, who talk at a normal conversational rhythm, the typical rate is around 120 to 150 words per minute. In the United States, the average American usually talks at 120; 150 WPM during conversations, and at 100, 150 WPM during presentations. Basically, about 150 WPM is totally normal, and a steady rhythm of 175 WPM already sits at the faster end of normal talk.
During chatter with friends or colleagues, talk naturally becomes faster. Because the flow is informal, the pace can grow to 180 WPM or even more. In everyday conversation, the average person commonly talks at 180 to 210 WPM.
But during presentaitons, when a bit (or a lot) of nervous energy kicks in, the pace commonly jumps above 220 WPM.
Generally, the conversational speaking rate is about 140 to 170 WPM. Skilled dictation can reach 160 to 200 WPM. In the world of audiobooks, narrators are asked to aim for reading between 140 and 160 words per minute.
Public speaking or prepared talk commonly works better at 110 to 140 WPM, a bit slower for clarity, emphasis or for more complex material. People commonly say that the ideal pace is around 120 words per minute.
Talk that is too fast is commonly harder to understand then talk said at a more moderate rhythm. Even the tone can get lost at very high speaking speeds. Public speaking is not a speed contest.
Pauses and pace are two of the tools available to a speaker.
Counting the speaking rate is easy. Simply take the number of spoken words and divide by the number of minutes that it took to deliver the talk. For instance, saying 450 words in 3 minutes means that the WPM is 150.
Various online tools and talk-to-text platforms can help with that, giving a more precise count and helping to spot your natural speaking rhythm. An online test for speaking speed measures how many words are said in a minute, while you read a short passage aloud, and the tool records and analyses the talk through a microphone.
A speaker with an average speaking rate will need 420 words for a 3-minute talk. A fast speaker will need 510 words, while a slow speaker will only need 330 words. Some apps measure the speaking rate and give color feedback: under 110 WPM shows red, 110 to 140 WPM shows yellow, 140 to 170 WPM shows green, and 170 to 200 WPMshows yellow again.
