The AP Calculus AB exam has two parts. Section 1 has multiple choice questions, that you do with and without a calculator the second section has free response questions with and without a calculator. You score it on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is the top score.

The multiple choice and free response parts are weighted 50-50. For wrong answers in multiple choice you do not lose points.
How AP Calculus AB and BC Exams Are Scored
The AP Calculus AB exam uses a total score system. Performance in the multiple choice and free response sections combine for one raw score. Later you change it to a final score of 1 to 5.
The College Board sets the limits to fix small differences in the hardnees of the exams.
Score 3 in AP Calculus AB is around 41 to 53 from 108 points, so roughly 38% to 49% right answers. The exam has 45 multiple choice questions. For example last year, 51 from 108 points worked for 3, 65 for 4 and 77 for 5.
A 4 in Calculus AB is something like 50 percent or even less right questions. Around 70% or more almost guarantees a 5.
According to the 2022 AP score distributions, only 20.4% of students reached 5. For 5 you needed 63.9% from the total combined points. In 2022, 16.1% received 4.
During the 2023 AP Calculus AB distributions, 22.39% reached 5 and 16.18% reached 4. The 2025 AP Calculus AB results divided like this: 5 at 20%, 4 at 29%, 3 at 15%, 2 at 23% and 1 at 13%.
AP Calculus AB students did best on questions of Unit 7 about differential equations, where 26% correctly answered every question. Also Unit 4 about applications of differentiation in context were good, with 19% of students getting every task.
The AP Calculus BC exam is made of 45 multiple choice questions and 6 free response questions. The average score was 2.94. Students who choose AP Calculus BC learn everything from the AB course.
They receive a subscore for AB when they take the BC exam. The Calculus AB subscore shows the result of the part for AB topics, which is around 60% of the whole exam. Most institutions consider BC as one exam and use its score for credit and placement.
5 in BC usually matches credit for both AB and BC.
Many schools and universities give credit and placement for scores 3, 4 or 5. Even so each school decides which points it accepts. At many, 4 or more is needed for school credit.
AP scores for 2026 will appear in mid-July on a changed schedule over a fewdays.
