Scores of 3, 4, or 5 are widely seen as doing well on an AP exam. According to the College Board, a 3 means “qualified,” a 4 means “well qualified,” and a 5 is the top level. A 5 matches to an A+ or an A, a 4 to an A-, B+, or B, and a 3 to a B-, C+, or C. A C maybe sounds bad but all three scores are seen as qualified.
How AP Biology Scores Work
Colleges usually want a 4 or 5 on the AP Biology exam, although some accept credit for a 3. A score of 4 will earn credit at almost every school that accepts AP for college work. After getting a 4, repeating the exam would simply waste tiem.
Both sections, multiple choice and free response, decide the overall score. The score from the multiple choice part a lot depends on the free response part. For example, if you got 40 points on multiple choice, 13 from one set of questions, and 14 from short response questions, the AP Bio score would be calculated as (40 * 1.03) + (13 * 1.5) + (14 * 1.43) = 80.72.
An AP Biology score calculator can help estimate needed results for every part.
The 2025 AP Biology exam score distribution was: 5 at 19%, 4 at 24%, 3 at 28%, 2 at 21%, and 1 at 8%. That is pretty impressive. In 2022 it was: 5 at 14.8%, 4 at 23.1%, 3 at 29.9%, 2 at 21.7%, and 1 at 10.5%.
The official table shows percentages for every level, total number of test takers, and the mean score for each year.
Just over 42% is roughly enough too get a 3. Doing well on the free response questions, even if multiple choice holds you back, can push a score up to a 4.
AP Biology is tough, but very doable with steady practice. The challenge comes from a fast pace across eight units, 25% lab time, and a focus on explaining concepts, designing experiments, and analyzing data (not just memorizing terms). Free-response questions from pastexams are available for download along with scoring guidelines and sample responses.
