The total score of the GMAT ranges between 205 and 805, and all values end in 5. That system counts for the current version, called GMAT Focus Edition. The old version, the GMAT 10th Edition, had its own scale for total points.
Each section contributes equally to the whole score, so no part weighs more than others.
What Is a Good GMAT Score?
Through the years points shifted a lot, which caused uneven distribution. The new scale helps institutions better understand student results. In the 10th Edition many aimed 700 points as standard.
Now 645 has the same meaning in the Focus Edition. Although the numbers seem less high, they do not value less.
You consider good GMAT score between 645 and 705, with ideal values for many around 675. 685. Points of 700 and up are well seen, but some top business schools require even more. Programs like Harvard and Stanford require usually 720 to 740.
At 750 or more the doors open to every business school worldwide.
The GMAT has also a writing score of 0 to 6. It allows admissions officers to check writing skills, but it does not affect final decisions like this strongly as the other points. Percentile rankings show clearly where test takers stand compared to others.
Perfect GMAT score happens very rarely. Even people with maximum results in SAT, ACT and GRE did not succeed to reach 800 after six official attempts, although they reached 770. The exam does not work simply as other tests.
More right answers do not always give higher score, because the scoring formula is complex.
Strong GMAT score helps the whole application, but cannot alone save weak application. It estimates skills for business world and connects with graduate success. Even so experience, career progress and essays matter equally.
Perfect score can offset low GPA, but not weak resume or bad essays. The global average is around 550 out of 800. Do official practice test early help to set target befure deep preparation.
