The page count for paperback in KDP is one of those troubles that trip up many writers when they first try to publish a print book. For physical books page count matters about the binding. So that the cover can join to the book, a minimum number of pages is needed
For KDP paperback the minimum page count is 24 pages. A minimum paperback has at least 6 sheets, so 12 leaves. A manuscript with 25 pages prints on 7 sheets, making 14 leaves or 28 pages.
KDP Paperback Page Count Rules
The minimum page count for print books ensure enough thicknes for the binding, so that the cover can join. Under 40 pages the paperback is too thin for good print quality.
The maximum page count depends on ink, paper type, size and other causes. KDP paperback in 6×9 can have 828 pages with black ink and white paper, or 776 pages with black ink and cream paper. Paperbacks are maximum 828 pages.
Hardcovers are limited to 550 pages. For hardcovers in KDP the minimum is 75 pages.
KDP will count the page count from the file of your manuscript and will round to an even number if it must. In paperbacks and hardcovers every sheet has two pages, front and back. The whole count takes all pages in the book, whether numbered or no. Also front matter and back matter pages, together with any empty pages that Amazon may add.
Usually there are one or two such.
To avoid empty pages at the end of the book, the total page count should be divisible by four. Download the KDP template for Word and put your content in it, this will help. Add empty pages so that chapters start on the right page, so you will have a set count.
That is later used to estimate the width of the spine on the cover.
Word count and page count do not always match for every book. The font and spacing make a difference. For instance, a book with 86,000 words was 280 pages in one size.
A book with 81,000 words had 259 pages. Books from 60,000 to 80,000 words usually end up around 300 to 350 pages for a 6×9 paperback with cream paper and black ink.
Paperback for KDP you must send as PDF for the content. If the page count changes more than 10 percent after publication, KDP Bookshelf requires a new title and new ISBN. Little changes, like spelling repairs, do not require that.
Separate books in KDP Bookshelf are needed for black-and-white and color versions, because color printing costs more. Paper type however does not affect the printingcosts.
