The ACT has a scoring system that strongly looks like that of many school tests. Also it differs much from the SAT. The whole score figures as average of the sections in English, math and reading, where each section marks from 1 until 36.
The score of the English Language Arts (ELA) also goes until 36 and show results of the tests about English, reading and writing. Even so it does not enter in the calculation of the ACT Composite Score. The Composite ACT will be changed and will depend on the performance in English, math and reading.
How ACT Scores Work
Math and Science combines itself for STEM score, while English, reading, and writing forms the ELA score. If a student does not do the optional writing test, ACT does not give ELA score. Otherwise, you receive separate points for English and reading, when the test lacks.
Actually the writing score figures inwardly until 36, but not simply from rough points multiplied. It shows only indirectly through the ELA points. The writing test measure, whether you can build and defend argument.
Some schools take it in account for ELA-relevant points or largely consider. The lowest writing score are 2, the highest 12. The essay notes impacts the ELA sub-score, that averages essay, reading, and English.
Even so no one really trusts the ELA score. Even those colleges that ask for the essay, give it little of attention. Score of 10 in writing absolutely not bad.
In the score reports show percentile bars at the points. They point, as the student stands comparatively to the others. The percentiles compare with recent high school graduates of the own state and of whole country.
Students get national and state percentiles for eight fields. Here they: Composite, Math, Science, STEM, English, reading, writing and ELA. Under the main scores appears ELA and STEM.
Maybe student surpasses in ELA comparatively to STEM. Also it is possible to note, that the STEM is lower than the composite score. The ELA score mixes results of English, reading, and writing, if they were done.
