Ebook royalty is made up of the income that one gets from the sale of ebooks. Usually it matches to a set part of the retail cost. This percentage plays an important role when one chooses the price for an ebook.
Amazon KDP offers two types of royalties for every ebook: 35 percent option and 70 percent option. The set price determines what options are available. Ebooks with a price between 0.99 and 2.98 dollars fall under the 35 percent option.
How ebook royalties work
Those between 2.99 and 9.99 dollars qualify for the 70 percent, although one must subtract delivery costs. The lowest price for 70 percent stays 2.99 dollars. Also, the list price must not pass 80 percent of the cost of the print version available at Amazon.
When an ebook does not qualify for the 70 percent option or the author refuses the terms, it receives only 35 percent of royalties. Six required terms are linked to the 70 percent option. Books with mainstream content from public domain do not qualify for 70 percent.
Amazon does not include a delivery fee for books sold in the 35 percent option. That fee can become quite high for illustrated books, so that sometimes 35 percent results more profitable.
Independent publishing, that commonly chooses the 35 percent option, mostly deals with creators of picture books or comics. The delivery cost ranges according to the currency of the land, and regions like India, Brazil, Japan and Mexico belong to 35 percent stores, unless the ebook joined KDP Select. KDP Select also allows authors to arrange a number of promotions, during which one can set a price of 99 cents and still receive 70 percent income.
Authors get a 90-day period with five free days.
At 0.99 dollars an author receives around 0.35 dollars each sale. At 2.98 dollars that reaches about 1.04 dollars. With the 70 percent option at 2.99 dollars the prize is almost 2.09 dollars for every copy.
Low prices, for instance from 0.99 to 1.99 dollars, work well for launch phases, to get reviews sooner and later reach a higher level.
Other websites pay differently. Google Play, Apple, Kobo and Barnes & Noble all give 70 percent KDP Ebook Royalty, no matter the price of the ebook. Scribd delivers 70 percent for direct purchases, if at least 10 percent of the text is read.
Archway Publishing pays 50 percent royalty from final income. Amazon controls around 70 percent of the whole ebook market.
In traditional publishing the usual rate for ebooks is 25 percent. The Authors Guild calls that unfair, because the production of ebooks costs less to publishers. They always ask for higher percentages for ebooks.
During a sale of an ebook at Amazon, the platform takes 70 percent, so the author receives 25 percent from the remaining 30. Many stores point out the exact amountper copy, which helps in planning.
