The number of words in a manuscript affects more than one imagines. It involves almost every stage of the publishing process, from whether an agency will even notice your book to the thickness of the finished book. Editors in production and designers commonly depend on the Manuscript Word Count to plan the layout.

How Many Words Should a Book Have
Various genres of fiction have their own standards about length. Manuscripts of fantasy and science fiction usually fall between 80 000 and 100 000 words, exactly the range where editors find themselves comfortable. For example, The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien reached around 187 790 words, while The Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein surpassed 200 000.
Romances are a bit shorter, falling between 65 000 and 80 000 words. Mystery books commonly arrive at about 80 000. Technically, a novel can start at around 50 000 words, which matcehs to roughly 100 pages with single spacing.
What about a manuscript of 110 000 words? That can surprise. Agents mostly like something between 80 000 and 90 000 words.
Above 100 000, you meet pushback, especially as a new author. Many agencies simply refuse first drafts past that limit. Long texts mean more expenses for layout, proofreading and printing, so more risk for the publisher.
That does not mean that a long book is immediately impossible, but your chances for acceptance can suffer a lot.
When you send requests, do not forget to mention the Manuscript Word Count in the cover letter. It goes in the part where you present the title of you’re book. Some platforms for tracking requests even show the word counts directly in the request for full manuscript.
Academic texts follow entirely other standards. Scientific articles normally limit to 4 000 to 5 000 words, without counting the bibliography. Some journals are even strict (3 000 words as maximum), not counting tables, references and abstract.
The front part (title, author name, abstract) and back matter (bibliography, thanks) do not enter in the total. Tables, images and their captions normally do count, although some publications assign equal words to such elements. If you send something almost twice longer than the limit of the journal, you will probably receive fast refusal.
Conversion of pages to words happens commonly. The calculation usually relies on 33 lines each page, multiplied by 10 words each line; so roughly 330 words each page. One takes the words each line, multiplies by lines each page, then by the total number of pages.
But here is the catch: it is only a guess, not absolute truth. The word counts change a lot based on the layout, font size and gaps between lines.
Different writing groups define their own minimums. Nanowrimo requires more than 50 000 words to win, while the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America set the limit at 40 000 words for the Nebula Prize. Storm of Swords reaches 420 000 words andcovers 1 520 pages in manuscript.
