Chapters rarely have equal length. The chapter and scene outputs are best for planning nearby sections; use page or word marks for exact reading stops.
It always feels strange to see your ereader say you are thirty percent through a book when you still have thick stacks of pages left in your hands. That’s because there is a discrepancy between the number of actual pages vs. This is the number of “pages” the ereader thinks you’ve read. Most reading plans falls apart here. It’s just a fraction, but it doesn’t feel like you’re making any real progress until you know where you need to stop. How do you decide? Depending on whether this is a book club or if you’re trying to match print pages to pdfs, the math are different. It’s not necessarily the percentage that’s the issue. It’s the definition of “the whole.”
With ebooks, it’s ignoring all front matter you get with a hardcover. When it comes to manuscripts, they’ll change their page numbers anytime you change font size. And depending how you establish your baseline, someone else could be on chapter two when you’re on chapter four (thirty percent). How to Fix Your Reading Progress
Take the example of the PDF offset. Many digital readers don’t differentiate between cover art, copyright info, etc., and consider each sheet a page. So if there’s twenty pages of front matter before chapter one, then the reader will see content page twenty at viewer page forty. When it comes time to edit (or even just talk about it), who knows which is being referred to? How do you distinguish content from container? This tool lets you enter an offset to ensure your digital markers line up with what appears on paper. You won’t have to do any mental math.
The other side of this is the stability that word count affords, particularly for those authors who understands their book will change size when they format their document. Eighty-thousand-word novels are eighty thousand words no matter if they print out as three-hundred or four-hundred pages based off trim size. Percentage converted into word marks creates a way to fix structural beats that remain even as pagination shifts. This is why the calculator offer both page numbers and a word equivalent. It approximates how many words are on each page so we can find solid footing when moving from abstract progress to a concrete amount of text.
But chapters? Chapters get tricky because some will be longer and others shorter. You shouldn’t assume that each chapter divides equally, either. If you’re using chapters as a substitute for percentage, you may have a chapter that’s only 10 pages long and another that’s 25. This lets you get a general idea of where it falls on the book (so it’s more like a locator), but it doesn’t tell you an exact place to stop. So it works well for big-picture planning, but not for splitting up reading assignments fair. Use the structured results to find the section with the percentage you need, then make small changes if necesary.
There’s also the practical matter of reading windows. Most people don’t read exactly to the decimal point. A couple of pages either way (one percent plus or minus) provides a few pages of wiggle room. This is probably more realistic for daily goals or when reading with others. It recognizes that reading is a continuous process, not a separate one. Unless we’re talking about proofing or indexing, we don’t require surgical precision here. Knowing generally where something sits are sufficient to stay on target with the rest of the group for most purposes.
We want to make this abstract number into a location we can visit. After you adjust the rounding mode, offset, and basis for your format, that percent will become a navigational marker rather than an imprecise guess. It’s no longer “kinda close”, you know exactly how far along you are within the story if you’re reading/writing/trying to talk about it with someone else. You should of used this earlier.
