For online content, keep paragraphs to 3–5 sentences or under 150 words. Shorter paragraphs improve scannability and reduce bounce rate. White space is your friend — readers skim before they read.
Even in academic or long-form writing, mixing short and long paragraphs creates natural reading rhythm. A single-sentence paragraph after a dense block gives readers breathing room and emphasizes key points.
The Paragraph Length is one of those themes that does not have only one right answer. There does not exist a universal rule about the wanted Paragraph Length. It can be made up of only one sentence, whether that sentence is long, short or average.

In fiction even one word can be enough for a paragraph, if it fits well in the story.
How Long Should a Paragraph Be
Past advice suggests that paragraphs should have around five to eight sentences. Even so, in modern writing, especially in the digital world, one favours shorter paragraphs with two to four sentences. For websites and their contents, paragraphs of about 40 to 50 words work well.
For most writings, one advises to keep paragraphs to 100 to 200 words.
In social media and online posts, paragraphs with one to three sentences work best. The perfect size changes based on the used platform. Over the years, the standard Paragraph Length dropped form more than 40 words to under 20 words.
Overall, the movement goes to shorter sentences and paragraphs.
For essays, one usually advises paragraphs with at least three to five sentences. An essay of 2 500 words normally holds around 12 to 20 paragraphs. Paragraphs in essays can be as short as one sentence or as long as a quarter or half of a double-spaced page.
In the best case, they have the length that is needed to well complete the task.
In dialogs, often one sentence per paragraph works very well. With difficult themes, even three too five sentences can be too few. The Paragraph Length differs a lot between writers.
Some books use paragraphs with one word, while others have paragraphs that stretch through ten or more pages. The book Infinite Jest has a typical Paragraph Length of around a page and a half.
Variety is very important. Too many short paragraphs can seem choppy. Even so, short paragraphs stay better than big blocks of text.
The most pleasant way is to combine short, medium and bigger paragraphs. It is not a mistake to use shorter paragraphs, and it is not a mistake with longer ones. Having all paragraphs of the same length is nota good idea.
A paragraph should have the size that is needed to clearly separate an idea. New paragraphs start when the theme changes. Too strict a limit of words can force the writer to weird fixes or stop them from fully exploring an idea.
Around 50 to 120 words forms a strong paragraph. The range of 40 to 100 words covers the basic idea of different structure and Paragraph Length well. Simply write based on the need of paragraphs and move on.
