NCEES scores PE exams by total correct answers and then converts the raw result to a scaled score. Wrong answers are not deducted, and the official passing score is not published.

The PE exam is a big challenge for engineers, and understanding if you pass or fail can be confusing One passes the exam according to a scaled score, that shows the skill of the test taker. This score compares with the minimum level for that kind of exam, that experts set by means of statistical methods. NCEES does not disclose the passing score.
There is no fixed percentage of test takers that should pass or fail.
How the PE Exam Is Scored and How to Prepare
Results are simply shown as pass or fail. The result depends on the total number of right answers. Every question has the same value, and none is weighted otherwise.
If you fail you receive a diagnostic report about the performance at every main topic of the exam. That helps to find weak areas to improve them before the next attempt.
The passing score does not change according to state. Test takers of all jurisdictions require the same for their discipline during that testing. NCEES does not deliver PE licenses.
Results of the PE exam usually becone available after seven to ten days since the testing.
Although you do not receive an official score, you believe that for the PE Mechanical it is around 70 percent, so approximately 56 from 80 multiple choice questions. Better aim for 80 to 90 percent right, because the limit probably lies between 60 and 70 percent. Do not sit for the exam hoping for the minimum.
With 80 questions it lasts only six minutes each question.
Pass rates range according to discipline. For first test takers at Civil Water Resources and Environmental it is 66 percent, while at Chemical 62 percent. Widely NCEES data show that 67 percent of first test takers pass and 37 percent of repeats.
The PE Civil Structural had historically rates around 50 percent.
Various books help with preparation. One of them intends to quickly strengthen the whole PE score by means of better insight of all topics. Other offers infinite computer practice tests, each with 55 questions in two and half hours to imitate the real, with results after each.
Courses of companies as School of PE, PPI2Pass and Engineering Education offer programs for different PE disciplines. Around 30 percent of the exam solve only by means of well known reference materials. Study guides and cheat sheets with main conversions and equations also are useful for preparation.
