The score of the TOEFL reading shows how well you understand difficult academic texts. Report about TOEFL scores show results for every part: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Each from the four sections has a maximum of 30 points, so the whole reaches 120, although raw scores range a lot between them.
Most questions give 1 point, but those of type “Reading to Learn”. The last in every passage; value 2 or 3 points. ETS issues final score of 0 to 30, that you receive from raw points according to a special table.
How TOEFL Reading Scores Work
Because difficulty of tests differs a bit, you adjust scores for fairness; that ETS calls “equating“. For instance, 40 right answers in easy reading part, where many reach high raw scores, can give only 27 final points. Here occasionally 21 or 22 right answers in reading give 30 points, and ocasionally only 29.
Good reading score stays between 24 and 30. Above 22 already are strong, because it passes the middle. Some universities want total TOEFL score of 100, together with 25 for reading and listening, 26 for speaking and 24 for writing.
Whole can please, but weak reading commonly causes problems, because it ranks among the most important sections.
At the end of TOEFL you see unofficial score for reading and listening… Those already are final. The official ETS book about TOEFL iBT carries five real past tests.
When you do them by way of the test software, the final scores are raw points, not the real final. Then the book helps to convert those points to the right range.
Reading passages commonly follow certain patterns. Some are like encyclopedia articles about topics. Others show advantages and disadvantages of something.
Some describe problem with solutions, other applications or use. Best way to improve reading score is read many English books. Because TOEFL uses non-fiction texts, scientific essays and newspaper articles really help.
Practice reading without dictionary helps you understand without knowing every word. Wikipedia gives unlimited free resources for almost everything, so it works well for practice. The more you practice and know the section, the higher will be your score, there simply do not exist shortcuts.
