Travel agents mainly earn from Travel Agent Commission on bookings. Suppliers, like hotels, tour groups, cruise lines and car rental companies, give agents a percentage from each booking done for clients. Usually the suppliers themselves pay those commissions, not the travelers.

Hotels, airlines, tour groups, cruise lines and insurance companies include the pay of the agent in their prices. They set aside part from the sale for the agent.
How Travel Agents Earn Money
There is no strict average for Travel Agent Commission. The patterns are not simple and clear and there is not only one way to do it. Even so, commissions for hotels tend to be around 10 percent.
For cruises one typically pays between 10 and 17 percent. Some suppliers offer from 5 to 16 percent, but 16 percent usually counts only for sellers with big volume. Booking a hotel through a travel firm most commonly gives aruond 5 percent.
Agents can earn from hotel stays between 10 and 20 percent. Like this, a hotel booking for 1 000 dollars could bring the agent from 100 to 200 dollars. The problem is that agents commonly receive that money only after the journey of the client.
Commissions for cruises are not as simple as a set percentage from the whole price. There are parts that do not count toward commission, like port fees and taxes. A cruise for 5 000 dollars could have only around 3 500 dollars that indeed can earn Travel Agent Commission.
An independent travel agent earns from too main sources: commissions and service fees. An agent that works alone does not receive a fixed salary and depends only on commissions from suppliers and fees from clients. More active agents can hope for yearly income of 36 000 to 60 000 dollars, based on place, experience and kind of work.
The most common such agents sell between 500 000 and 1 million dollars of travel products. Luxury travel is the most quickly growing part.
Commission splits with host agencies are very important. Some hosts give new agents 60 percent and allow a rise to 90 percent based on sales. Others start at 80 percent and can reach 95.
Some more expert agents have legacy splits even up to 97 percent. A good minimum to look for is a split of 80/20. One must also think about monthly member fees, insurance costs and taxes.
Agencies that reach big volumes of bookings for a certain supplier can receive higher Travel Agent Commission based on their impact. Agents commonly sign contracts with travel suppliers, that list exact prices and terms. Preferred suppliers pay between 10 and 16 percent, and sometimes even up to 20.
Fancy properties and all-inclusive resorts tend to give on the higher level. Airlines, on the other hand, stopped paying commissions to agents already in the 1990s. Train bookings also mostly donot give commissions.
Online travel agencies like Expedia and Orbitz work differently. They are resellers, not classic agencies. They buy tickets in bulk with a discount and resell them.
When someone books through an online travel agency, the platform takes the commission that normally would go to a travel agent.
